****************** There is only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way. Christopher Morley ************ Eating Fruit May Lead to Better Eyesight In a recent study, people over the age of 50 who ate at least 3 servings of fruit per day were less likely to develop macular degeneration than those who consumed less than 1.5 servings per day. Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness. Fruits that may protect your vision include apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, mangoes, apricots, pears, melons, citrus, and berries. In addition to protecting your vision, fruit contains fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that combat aging. Researchers conducting a study monitored participants' daily intake of fruit, vegetables, antioxidant vitamins, and carotenoids. While all are part of a healthy diet, fruit consumption was the only dietary factor linked to reduced rates of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older adults. The people who consumed at least 3 servings of fruit per day over a 12- to 18-year period lowered their risk of developing macular degeneration by more than 30 percent. A single serving of fruit would be equivalent to a medium-sized apple or pear or a half cup of canned fruit. Prospective study of intake of fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and carotenoids and risk of age-related maculopathy. Cho, E., Seddon, J. M., Rosner, B., Willett, W. C., Hankinson, S. E., Archives of Ophthalmology 2004 Jun;122(6):883-892 -- Do You Tire Quickly? A magnesium deficiency may cause some people to tire quickly during physical activities. In a study of women, low magnesium levels increased the women's bodies' need for oxygen during exercise. This, in turn, could cause muscles to need more energy and thus tire more quickly. If you often suffer from fatigue, see your doctor. Unusual fatigue may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. In addition to deficient magnesium intake, other dietary deficiencies that may affect your energy levels include iron deficiency and certain B vitamin deficiencies. Good dietary sources of magnesium include tofu, salmon, and spinach. Sources of iron include red and white beans, turkey, and some cereals that have been enriched with iron. Good sources of folate (vitamin B9) include asparagus, sunflower seeds, and cereals that have been fortified with folic acid. If you have any health conditions, speak with your healthcare provider about your nutrition needs. People with certain health conditions may have special dietary concerns. For example, people with diabetes or kidney disease should consult their healthcare providers about their magnesium intake. Dietary magnesium depletion affects metabolic responses during submaximal exercise in postmenopausal women. Lukaski, H. C., Nielsen, F. H., Journal of Nutrition 2002;132:930-935. ***************************** We are pleased to offer the following public workshops/seminars: Introductory NLP EveningDecember 7, 7:00pm – 9:00pm Please come as our guest. While several of the robbers take the money from the tellers, others line the customers, including the accountants, up against a wall, and proceed to take their wallets, watches, etc. While this is going on accountant number one jams something in accountant number two's hand. Without looking down, accountant number two whispers, "What is this?" to which accountant number one replies, "it's that $50 I owe you." -- An accountant is having a hard time sleeping and goes to see his doctor. "Doctor, I just can't get to sleep at night." "Have you tried counting sheep?" "That's the problem - I make a mistake and then spend three hours trying to find it." **************** For more information, please visit our website or contact us at info@renewal.ca Copyright © 2005, Renewal Technologies Inc.
