Health and Wellness Tips

Please Note: The following information is presented for educational purposes only. Please consult your doctor or other qualified practitioner before undertaking any of the suggest approaches.

Drink Lots of Water

There's something in the water--and it appears to be good for your heart. In a recent study, drinking at least five glasses of water per day was shown to reduce the risk of fatal heart attack by about 50%, compared to drinking only two glasses per day. Drinking other fluids, such as tea, juice, coffee, or milk, did not have the same protective effect as drinking water.

Experts recommend drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Water helps to thin the blood, making it less likely to clot and cause blockages. In one study, men who drank at least five glasses of water per day had a 54% lower risk of dying from a heart attack compared to men who drank only two glasses of water per day. Women who drank five glasses per day had a 41% lower risk of heart attack death compared to women who drank only two glasses per day.

Cauliflower is Good for You

You may get an extra measure of colon protection if you add cauliflower florets to your weekly menu. Research has revealed that a natural compound found in cauliflower may inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in the colon. Just be sure to skip the cheese sauce, which can be loaded with saturated fat. Instead, season a steamed cauliflower head with olive oil and lemon, or use raw florets to scoop up low-fat yogurt dip.

The compound s-methyl methane thiosulfonate (MMTS), found in cauliflower, may be anticarcinogenic. Cauliflower also is a good source of vitamin C and potassium. One cup of florets contains 46 milligrams of vitamin C and 300 milligrams of potassium. To keep cauliflower fresh, store it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and keep it dry. Although it is available year-round, cauliflower is particularly plentiful in the spring and fall.

Loving Relationships

One of the keys to a long and loving relationship may lie in the way you support your mate's goals.

A recent study found a correlation between the degree of support couples demonstrated toward each person's individual goals and the success of their bond. People who perceived a high level of support for their personal goals were more likely to be satisfied with the quality of their relationship, compared to people who felt little support.

Participate in the Next Sing Along

If you're trying to protect your health with some stress-reducing tunes, tap your foot and sing along.

Research shows that music has more immunity-boosting potential when people actively participate in it, rather than passively listen to it. In one study, people who kept the beat and sang along with a 30-minute music session had a greater increase in antibody concentrations compared to people who only listened to the music.

Overzealous Zinc

Are you getting too much of a good thing? If you eat a balanced diet and also take a zinc supplement, you might be.

Zinc is a trace mineral that supports many bodily functions, including immune system function and wound healing. However, too much zinc in your diet can interfere with the absorption of other minerals and hamper immune system function. If you eat a balanced diet, especially one containing meats and fortified breakfast cereals, skip the zinc supplement or choose one with less than 15 milligrams.

Soothing Soy

Adding a few soy-based foods to your diet may be one of the keys to better blood pressure control.

In a study, participants who ate 10 grams of soy protein twice per day for 6 weeks experienced an average drop of about 5 mm Hg in their diastolic blood pressure readings. Ten grams of soy protein is equivalent to about an 8-ounce glass of soymilk, a tablespoon of soy protein powder, or a half cup of firm tofu.
